my scruples

Discomfort

One of the things I’m learning, slowly and honestly, is that we must keep relying on God. Comfort has a strange way of making us self-sufficient, and when we become too comfortable, we begin to walk in the flesh without even realising it. We stop praying as deeply, stop listening as carefully, and start assuming we understand more than we actually do.

Discomfort, on the other hand, has a way of stripping us back to dependence. What makes us uncomfortable often becomes the very thing that drives us closer to God. In those moments, prayer is no longer a routine, it becomes survival. Faith is no longer theoretical, it becomes necessary.

Hard seasons often feel like they will break us. In the middle of them, it’s difficult to imagine that anything good could come out of the pressure, the waiting, or the uncertainty. It feels like loss, delay, or even failure. But something quietly happens when we persevere. Our strength deepens, our wisdom sharpens, and our capacity expands in ways comfort could never produce.

Discomfort teaches us patience. It forces us to listen. It humbles us. It reveals our blind spots and corrects our assumptions. More importantly, it reminds us that we were never meant to do life or leadership on our own strength.

Looking back, I can see that some of the seasons that felt most inconvenient were actually the most formative. They realigned my priorities, purified my motives, and built resilience I didn’t know I would need. The growth didn’t happen despite the discomfort; it happened because of it.

I’m learning not to run from discomfort too quickly. Not every uncomfortable season needs to be escaped, some need to be endured. If we stay, trust God, and keep moving forward with obedience, we often come out stronger, wiser, and positioned for greater impact than we ever imagined.

Discomfort isn’t always a sign that something is wrong. In many cases, it’s evidence that growth is taking place. Comfort, on the other hand, can be deceptive because it can quietly signal stagnation, misplaced confidence, or a slow drift away from dependence on God.

When I am experiencing comfort, I am looking for things to do, gifts to give so that I can continue to dream bigger than myself and current needs. Bigger dreams make us uncomfortable and that is good. That is the only way we can keep relying on God and walking with Him. God wants us to walk with Him so that He will place His agenda in our hearts and we will fulfill His purpose. I strongly believe that the purpose of God’s blessing on the works of our hands is to make us continuously humble before Him, and through that, walk with Him, listen to Him and do what He desires. And this is a twinning thing because there is always a witness in our spirit-man that this is “the right thing” to do.  So, don’t stress it, to have an extra-ordinary experience. Yes, God is faithful and just, the source of wisdom, knowledge and understanding Himself, so He can work with anyone and any situation.

So, get uncomfortable, and be joyful about it.
